Italy's Elia Viviani went one better than this result at last year's Prudential RideLondon-Surrey Classic as he claimed victory in the one-day race after timing his surge for the line to perfection on The Mall in London.

The Deceuninck–Quick-Step rider, second at the 2018 edition of the International Cycling Union WorldTour race, avoided a late crash in the peloton to secure the win in 3 hours 46min 16sec.

Viviani completed the 169 kilometres course ahead of Ireland's Bora–Hansgrohe rider Sam Bennett, who took second place.

The Italian's team-mate Michael Morkov came through to earn third.

The conclusion of yesterday's RideLondon Classique was marred by a nasty crash towards the end of the race, which saw Lorena Wiebes crowned the winner after Dutch compatriot Kirsten Wild was disqualified.

The finale to the men's event also involved a collision and ended the challenge of several riders in the leading group.

Australian Caleb Ewan, winner of three stages of the Tour de France, failed to mount a serious threat on the title today and dropped out of the peloton 75km from the finish.

"We knew it was a chaotic finish but we knew also we can move smart and use the legs," Viviani told BBC Sport.

"It was amazing teamwork because Michael was third so thanks to the team for sure.

"It is one of the five classics I have in my head to win in my career, now I just miss the two big ones, Milan-San Remo and Gent-Wevelgem so it is good to add another one."
