Lorena Wiebes of The Netherlands was declared the winner of the Prudential RideLondon Classique after compatriot and defending champion Kirsten Wild was disqualified following a huge crash on the finishing straight on The Mall in London.

Wild, who rides for the WNT–Rotor Pro Cycling, crossed the line in first place but was later disqualified after she inadvertently caused a pile-up which brought down half the peloton.

The Dutchwoman moved away from her sprinting line and her back wheel was clipped by Chloe Hosking, resulting in the nasty crash.

The race jury decided to strip her of the victory not long after the conclusion of the International Cycling Union (UCI) Women's WorldTour race.

Parkhotel Valkenburg's Wiebes was awarded the win in 1 hour 33min 56sec, with Italian Valcar–Cylance rider Elisa Balsamo second and Sunweb's Coryn Rivera of the United States in third.

It will be the turn of the men tomorrow as the RideLondon–Surrey Classic, part of the UCI WorldTour, takes centre stage.

The race has attracted a strong field, with Australia's Caleb Ewan, winner of three stages of the Tour de France last month, among those expected to challenge for victory.

The Lotto-Soudal rider, who triumphed on the final stage of the Tour last Sunday (July 28), is joined by the likes of Italian Elia Viviani of Deceuninck-Quick Step, second at last year's event.

Frenchman Arnaud Démare of Groupama – FDJ, BORA-Hansgrohe's Jempy Drucker and Alexander Kristoff of UAE Team Emirates are among the former winners set to be in action tomorrow.
