Canada got the defence of their Women's Under-19 World Lacrosse Championships title off to a winning start with victory against England in Peterborough in Ontario.

The US, runners-up in 2015, are in the same group as their North American rivals and they began with a 12-4 triumph against Australia.

Kenya became the first African side to compete in the tournament against South Korea but they couldn't make a winning start in Pool C.

The South Koreans lost their opening match against Germany yesterday but bounced back to secure a 15-10 victory today.

Germany made it two wins from two with a comfortable 18-2 triumph against Jamaica.

In Pool D, the Czech Republic maintained their winning start by seeing off Ireland 20-3 as Mexico overcame Chinese Taipei 10-6 in a low-scoring match.

New Zealand and Japan all but sealed their progress to the knockout phase with 13-7 and 21-7 victories against Scotland and Wales, respectively, in Pool B.

Haudenosaunee's winning start in Canada continued as they followed up a 19-1 win against Belgium with a 21-3 demolition of Pool E rivals Israel.

Hong Kong, who secured their first triumph at a World Championships yesterday, came unstuck in a thumping 21-2 loss to Puerto Rico.

The tournament continues tomorrow.
