Jamie Bestwick was denied a 14th X Games gold medal after being beaten in the BMX vert final in Minneapolis today.

The British rider could only claim silver behind Australia's Vince Byron, who pulled out a stunning run on his second attempt to claim victory.

The 29-year-old from Brisbane, after wiping out in his first run, executed a near perfect performance second time around for a score of 90.66 points.

Bestwick recorded 89.33 points on his first attempt, but was unable to improve after Byron's brilliant effort and had to settle for the silver medal.

Bronze went to American Mykel Larrin, who scored 88.66 points.

There was also disappointment for another previous Summer X Games champion, as Mitchie Brusco could only take silver in the skateboard vert event.

Brusco, who in 2018 landed his second ever 1080 to earn his first X Games gold, was runner up this time around as fellow American Jimmy Wilkins earned gold while Clay Kreiner completed an all-United States podium for bronze.

In the other event to kick off the 2019 Summer X Games, Australian Jarryd McNeil won gold in the moto X step up, with silver going to Bryce Hudson of the US while another pair of Americans, Colby Raha and Ronnie Renner, shared the bronze medal.

Competition is due to continue in Minneapolis tomorrow with the finals of the women's skateboard park, moto X quarterpipe, BMX big air and Moto X freestyle.
