World champion Kento Momota will be hoping to rediscover his form when he competes at the badminton test event for next year's Olympic Games in Tokyo this week.

The Japanese is the top seed in the men's singles event at the Japan Open at Musashino Forest Sport Plaza, part of the Badminton World Federation World Tour Super 750 series.

He will aim to bounce back from his disappointing exit at the Indonesia Open, which concluded yesterday, after he suffered an early defeat at the hands of unfancied Chinese player Huang Yu Xiang.

The defending Japan Open champion could face competition from the likes of Chinese Taipei's Chou Tien-chen, who triumphed in Indonesia to claim his first Super 1000 title.

Thailand's Kantaphon Wangcharoen could also challenge.

There is a strong Japanese presence in the women's singles draw as Indonesia Open winner Akane Yamaguchi bids for a second consecutive World Tour crown.

India's Olympic silver medallist Pusarla V Sindhu, beaten by Yamaguchi in the final in Jakarta, is among the other entrants.

They are joined by top seed Tai Tzu Ying of Chinese Taipei and Japan's former world champion Nozomi Okuhara, who has endured an inconsistent year so far.

Musashino Forest Sport Plaza, which will also host modern pentathlon's fencing round at the Olympics and wheelchair basketball at the Paralympics, was the first new permanent venue to be opened in November 2017.

The tournament at the venue for badminton at Tokyo 2020 has a prize pot of $750,000 (£602,000/€668,000).

It is the latest in the "Ready Steady Tokyo" test event series for the 2020 Olympics and Paralympics following competitions in weightlifting, archery, surfing and road cycling.
