A freak early goal handed Algeria a 1-0 victory over Senegal in the final of the Africa Cup of Nations at Cairo International Stadium in Egypt.

In just the second minute, Baghdad Bounedjah’s right-footed effort from outside the box looped up off Salif Sane as he attempted to block, sending the ball arching over keeper Alfred Gomes and into the net.

Senegal, making only their second appearance in the final, were the better side for much of the clash but could not make their dominance tell.

M’Baye Niang went close either side of halftime, smashing just over the top and then rounding stopper Rais M’Bolhi before shooting wide from an acute angle.

Youssouf Sabaly also saw his Exocet parried to safety by M’Bolhi.

Senegal thought they had a penalty for an Adlene Guedioura handball from Ismaila Sarr’s cross on the hour.

But referee Néant Alioum reversed his decision following the intervention of the Video Assistant Referee and Algeria saw the game out.
