The United States will begin their bid for a record-extending eighth triumph at the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) Under-19 Women’s World Cup when the 2019 edition begins in Bangkok tomorrow.

This year marks the first time since 2005 that the US are not arriving at the tournament as defending champions.

It comes after they were beaten in the 2017 final by Russia, who will not have the chance to defend their title having not secured qualification for the event at last year's FIBA Under-18 European Championship in Italy.

Ironically, they missed out on their ticket while playing on the exact same court as they won the FIBA Under-19 World Cup in Udine two years ago.

The US have been drawn in Group C with Australia, Hungary and South Korea.

Group A is made up of Canada, Latvia, Mozambique and hosts Thailand, while Group B features Argentina, Belgium, China and Mali.

Completing the 16-team line-up are the Group D competitors of Colombia, Germany, Japan and Spain.

Colombia, Germany and Mozambique are all making their first appearance at the event.

This is the 13th edition of the FIBA Under-19 Women's World Cup and the second time that Bangkok has played host.

The city also did so back in 2009, when Thailand lost all five of their matches to finish in last place.

Group phase action is due to take place from tomorrow through to July 23, with each team playing against all other teams in their section once.

All teams will advance to the final phase, with Group A crossing with Group B and Group C crossing with Group D in the round of 16 on July 24.

The final phase of the event is also scheduled to be held in Bangkok, with the new world champions being crowned on July 28.

Matches will be played at the Thai-Japan Youth Arena I and II.
