Top seed Subhankar Dey of India has been knocked out of the men's singles event at the Badminton World Federation (BWF) Russian Open in Vladivostok following a straight-games defeat against Japan's Kodai Naraoka today.

Dey fell to an 18-21, 18-21 loss in round three of the BWF Tour Super 100 event at Sport Hall Olympik.

Naraoka now faces a quarter-final encounter with Ireland's Nhat Nguyen, who beat Australia's Runze Yan 19-21, 21-10, 21-15 in the last 16 today.

The highest-ranked player left in the men's singles draw is second-seeded Indonesian Shesar Hiren Rhustavito.

He eased to a 21-11, 21-8 victory over home player Maksim Makalov to set up a meeting with sixth-seeded Spaniard Pablo Abian, a 16-21, 21-12, 21-14 winner at the expense of India's Rahul Yadav Chittaboina.

In the women's singles event, top seed Kirsty Gilmour remains on course for success after overcoming Finland’s Airi Mikkela 21-10, 21-18 to earn a place in the quarter-finals.

Standing between the Scot and a last-four berth is India's Rituparna Das, who beat fifth-seeded Israeli Ksenia Polikarpova 21-18, 21-7.

Another seeded player suffering elimination today was third-ranked Nguyễn Thùy Linh after she lost 18-21, 24-22, 22-24 to Switzerland's Sabrina Jaquet.

Jaquet's reward for the upset is a last-eight meeting with Japan's Moto Hayashi, a 21-8, 21-11 victor over Russia's Viktoriia Kozyreva.
