The United States, bronze medallists in the inaugural International Volleyball Federation (FIVB) Men’s Nations League last year, will take either gold or silver this season having beaten Olympic champions Brazil in the semi-final.

With Chicago’s Credit Union 1 Arena hosting all the final round matches of this year’s competition -  for which qualification began in May - the home team were assured of huge support as they earned a 3-2 win over the nation they beat to bronze last season.

Their opponents in the final will be the defending champions, Russia, who beat Poland 3-1 in their semi-final.

The US won their first set 25-21 before losing the next two 17-25 and 21-15.

But at that point they turned the match around, winning the fourth set 25-20 to draw level and then taking the decider 15-9.

Matthew Anderson, 32, used all his experience as he ended up top scorer for the United States with 22 points.

For Brazil, Wallace De Souza top-scored with 17 points.

Russia’s progress was more straightforward.

Having won the opening set 25-19, they were pegged back by Poland, who won the next one 26-24.

But the champions were not to be denied as they completed their won 25-22, 25-21.

Viktor Poletaev top-scored for them with 24 points.

The matches for bronze and gold are due to place tomorrow.
