The world’s top-ranked side – looking for a 12th World Cup crown – put their stamp on the tournament immediately, racing into a lead that they were never in danger of relinquishing.

Caitlin Bassett and Gretel Tippett were particularly impressive in the shooting circle as the Diamonds eased to victory in the Group A clash.

Australia's Sarah Klau, who made her international debut today, said: "It’s everything that I could have imagined. 

"Standing there, during the national anthem, I got the goosebumps like I thought I would. 

"It was such an incredible experience – it’s always been a dream of mine.

"Having debuted now, I think that gives me a lot of confidence leading into the next few games. 

"Hopefully I do all right."

Today's other match in Group A saw Zimbabwe, backed by a vocal band of supporters, beat Sri Lanka 79-49.

There was also a successful start for hosts England, who defeated Uganda 64-32 in Group D thanks in part to Jo Harten's 29 goals on her 100th international appearance. 

Uganda had to play the final quarter with six players after centre Stella Oyella was suspended for two minutes in the third and then sent off for repeated infringements.

Next up for Commonwealth champions England are Scotland, 53-35 winners over Samoa, tomorrow. 

In Group B, four-times winners New Zealand got their bid for glory off and running with a 64-45 success over Malawi in the first match of the day.

They are joined at the top of the standings by Barbados, who overcame Singapore 69-34.

Jamaica and South Africa both made winning starts in Group C with the former beating Fiji 85-29 and the latter claiming a 76-45 victory over Trinidad and Tobago. 

The top three teams in Groups A and B will move through to play in Group F, while the top three sides in Groups C and D will go into Group G in the second stage.

Teams finishing first and second in Groups F and G will go through to the semi-finals.

They are scheduled for July 20 before the final and third-place playoff are held on July 21.
