Holders Spain secured their second consecutive victory at the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) Women’s EuroBasket in Riga.

Spain met Britain with both teams seeking to build on victories yesterday in Pool A of the competition.

The Spanish team were considered the clear favourites against Britain, who are 25th in the world rankings.

The improving British team secured a surprise 34-31 halftime lead against the Olympic silver medallists in Arena Riga.

Spain turned the match around in the remaining two quarters to earn a 67-59 victory and move to the brink of the quarter-finals.

Defeat means Britain are likely to have to contest a qualifying match to reach the quarter-finals, should they seal a top three spot in the pool.

Co-hosts Latvia bounced back from their loss to Britain yesterday by overcoming Ukraine 82-74 to lie third in the standings.

France, the 2017 runners-up, recorded a comfortable 88-53 win over Montenegro in Pool B to close on direct qualification to the quarter-finals.

They will seal the spot should they overcome Sweden tomorrow, with their next opponents having lost 71-64 to the Czech Republic today.

Hungary became the first team to be assured of a place in the last four, after they won their second match in Pool C, which is taking place at Niš in Serbia.

The Hungarian team earned a 59-51 win over Italy, while Slovenia beat Turkey 62-55.

Having beaten both Italy and Slovenia, Hungary were assured of top spot as they cannot be overtaken by either team due to their head-to-head record.

Italy and Slovenia will advance to the qualifying playoffs, with Turkey already eliminated.

Co-hosts Serbia recorded their second consecutive victory in Pool D.

They overcame Russia 77-63 to top the standings, as Belarus beat Belgium 69-61.

The pool phase will conclude on Sunday (June 30), with a rest day tomorrow.
