Uganda moved within touching distance of the knockout stage at the Africa Cup of Nations with a 1-1 draw against Zimbabwe in Cairo.

In their opening Group A match earlier this week, the minnows recorded their first win in 41 years when they defeated the Democractic Republic of Congo 2-0 and a point against Zimbabwe puts them on the brink of progress to the latter stages in Egypt.

At Cairo International Stadium, Emmanuel Okwi gave Uganda a 12th-minute lead with a close-range finish after Zimbabwe goalkeeper George Chigova parried Lumala Abdu's shot.

Zimbabwe pulled level five minutes before the break though as Khama Billiat flicked a low Ovidy Karuru cross into the far corner.

Neither side could find a winner, though, and Uganda sit second in the group behind Egypt.

Hosts Egypt saw off Democratic Republic of Congo 2-0 with Mo Salah scoring one and assisting one as The Pharoahs progressed to the last 16.

Ahmed Almohamady met Salah's cross in the 25th minute and tucked it away at the second attempt to give the hosts the lead at Cairo International Stadium.

Salah doubled the lead just before the break as Egypt cruised to a 2-0 win and into the knockout phase.

In Group B Nigeria are in pole position for the last 16 after securing a second successive 1-0 victory in the sizzling African heat.

Both sides struggled as temperatures hit the mid-40s at Alexandria Stadium but a glancing header from Kenneth Omeruo in the 73rd minute was enough to seal victory for the Super Eagles.

Madagascar and Burundi are due to face each other tomorrow in the Group's other match day two fixture in Alexandria.
