Bangladesh rose to fifth in the International Cricket Council Men's World Cup standings and remain in contention for a semi-final berth with a 62-run win against Afghanistan in Southampton today.

All-rounder Shakib Al Hasan's half-century and tournament-best five-wicket haul was the highlight of a dominant performance at the Hampshire Bowl.

He becomes just the second man to make a 50 and take five wickets in a Cricket World Cup match, following India all-rounder Yuvraj Singh against Ireland in 2011.

Mushfiqur Rahim made a fighting 87-ball 83, while a brisk 24-ball 35 cameo from Mosaddek Hossain lifted Bangladesh to 262-7, before they bowled Afghanistan out for 200 in 47 overs.

Bangladesh now have seven points, one less than fourth-placed England with the top four teams progressing to the semi-finals.

But they have played at least one more game than all the teams above them, which also include leaders New Zealand, second-placed Australia and third-ranked India.

A strong Bangladesh total was ultimately made a winning one by Hossain's flourish and Afghanistan's poor fielding through the morning.

Unlike their opponents, Bangladesh did not bowl any spin in the powerplay overs, but when they did, it turned the game decisively.

Shakib came on in the 11th over and immediately got a breakthrough, while Mehidy Hasan and Mosaddek kept the batsmen quiet.

In his fifth over, Shakib denied Gulbadin Naib a half-century when he had him caught by Liton Das at short extra cover, while the dangerous Mohammad Nabi was bowled through the gate second ball.

From 117-5 there was no coming back for Afghanistan.

Shakib, who rose to the top of the batting charts with his effort earlier in the day, added Asghar Afghan and Najibullah Zadran to his tally.

The Cricket World Cup is due to continue tomorrow when hosts England face Australia at Lord’s in London.

Round-robin action is scheduled to run through to July 6.
