Pakistan boosted their faint hopes of reaching the International Cricket Council (ICC) World Cup semi-finals by claiming victory over South Africa, who suffered elimination from the tournament at Lord's in London.

South Africa and Pakistan had only earned one victory at the tournament to date, ensuring their clash was a must win for both sides.

After winning the toss and electing to bat at the home of cricket, Pakistan made a steady start to their innings.

Their openers Imam ul-Haq and Fakhar Zaman both scored 44 before Babar Azam scored 69.

A star turn from Haris Sohail aided Pakistan’s cause further, with his 89 runs off 59 balls helping them reach 308-7.

South Africa’s difficulties with the bat continued as they struggled to keep up with the required run rate despite the efforts of Faf du Plessis.

The captain top scored with 63, but a regular loss of wickets saw South Africa fail to build the momentum to challenge Pakistan’s score.

South Africa eventually finished on 259-9 from their 50 overs, 49 runs short of Pakistan’s total.

It was a fifth defeat in six matches for South Africa, who also saw their clash with the West Indies rained off.

Their only success at the tournament came against Afghanistan.

While the results see the 2015 semi-finalists exit the tournament, Pakistan’s record of two wins and three defeats sees them occupy seventh place.

Pakistan are likely to need to win their remaining three matches to stand a chance of reaching the top four, which would earn them a semi-final spot.
