The first basketball medals were awarded at the African Beach Games on the penultimate day of the event on the island of Sal in Cape Verde.

Nigeria celebrated gold in the women’s shootout final, with Josette Anaswem topping the standings.

She ended with a score of four in the final, her time giving her the edge over Namibia’s Victoria Netumbo after she had achieved the same score.

Sissoko Assetou of Mali completed the podium places, after managing one point in the final.

The host nation secured gold in the men’s dunk competition, with Anderson Correia topping the standings with a score of 148.

The Cape Verde athlete finished clear of Mali’s Diaromua Benke and Ivory Coast’s Aboubacar Traore, who both ended on 123 points.

Semi-finals of the 3x3 competitions will take place tomorrow with Mali facing Cape Verde and Algeria meeting Ivory Coast in the men’s event.

Togo and Namibia will clash in the women’s semi-finals, before Mali and Nigeria go head-to-head.

The medal matches will take place later in the day at Santa Maria Beach.

Morocco progressed to the final of the men’s beach soccer final by beating Nigeria 5-2.

They will face Senegal, who cruised to a 6-1 win over Cape Verde.
