Lima has stepped up preparations for hosting this year's Pan American Games by holding three test events, in athletics, equestrian and volleyball.

The Peruvian capital held the events over the weekend to test the running of operations including ticketing, security, transportation and anti-doping.

The South American Athletics seniors championships took place at the newly upgraded Videna Sports Complex, with approximately 383 athletes from 14 countries across the Americas in what doubled as one of the final qualifiers for Lima 2019, and for the International Association of Athletics Federations World Championships in Doha.

The Videna complex, which has also hosted judo and power lifting test events, will serve as the main stadium for the Games in Lima, with other sports set to take place there including badminton, bowling, handball, roller skating, squash, table tennis and track cycling.

Also tested was the Callao Sports Centre, which hosted a volleyball women's under-20 quadrangular tournament on the same days as the athletics.

Peru took on Chile, Colombia and Argentina in a four-way tournament.

The Centre is also scheduled to host the boxing, wrestling, racquetbal and taekwondo during the Pan American Games, due to take place between August 23 and September 1.

A total of 6,680 athletes from 41 countries and delegations are expected to compete in 39 sports and 61 disciplines.

An equestrian eventing tournament also took place at the Army Equitation School in La Molina.

The 67-acre facility will host all equestrianism events during the Games.

Lima 2019 president Carlos Neuhaus said before the events: "The three test events are incredible opportunities for athletes to showcase their talent and earn qualification slots.

"We’ll also be giving thousands of fans a preview of the amazing level of athleticism and competition we’ll see at the Pan American Games.

"As Lima 2019 works to get ‘Games-ready’, we are building excitement for the main event this summer and continuing to put sports at the heart of Peruvian life."
