Antoine Delpero of France made the best possible start to his pursuit of a third title as he recorded the highest score in the heats of the men's event at the World Longboard Surfing Championship in Biarritz.

The home favourite's waves of 8.80 and 8 saw him finish on a total of 16.80 on the opening day of competition at Côte des Basques.

Delpero topped the standings ahead of defending champion Kai Sallas, whose total of 13.90 was the second-highest of the heats.

Sallas' compatriot Cole Robbins also impressed as he finished third on 13.50.

Peruvian Benoit Clemente was among the other surfers to advance through heats as he bids to better the silver medal he claimed at last year's World Championship in China.

"The conditions were tricky today, but the world’s best longboarders showed why they have been selected to their national teams and put on a great display of graceful, elegant surfing," said International Surfing Association President Fernando Aguerre.

“The excitement in the air at this record-breaking edition is incredible, as the athletes are giving it their all for the qualification slots up for grabs in the Pan Am Games and Association of National Olympic Committees World Beach Games.

"Not only are gold medals up for grabs, but a historic opportunity to compete on a global stage in Olympic Movement events."
