France got their FIFA Under-20 World Cup campaign off to a winning start as an intervention from the video assistant referee helped the 2013 champions to a 2-0 victory over Saudi Arabia in Poland.

The Group E encounter was level until the VAR spotted a foul by Saudi Arabia's Faraj Abdullah Al Ghashayan, who was shown the red card in the 12th minute at Gdynia Stadium in Gdynia

France took full advantage as Youssouf Fofana gave his side the lead two minutes before half-time.

Amine Gouiri wrapped up the three points when he doubled France's lead in the second half.

In the other match in Group E, a late penalty from Diego Valanta earned Panama a 1-1 draw with Mali at Bydgoszcz Stadium, Bydgoszcz.

The African team went ahead Boubacar Konte seven minutes before the break and were on course to claim victory until the dying stages.

Abdoulaye Diaby fouled Panama left-back Guillermo Benitez just inside the box and Valanta converted the penalty to rescue a point.

European champions Portugal won their opening Group F match as a seventh-minute goal from Trincao was enough to beat South Korea at Municipal Stadium in Bielsko-Biała.
