Egypt’s Nouran Gohar and home player Sarah-Jane Perry produced two huge shocks at the Professional Squash Association (PSA) British Open in Hull as they earned quarter-final wins over world number one Raneem El Welily and world and defending champion Noor El Sherbini, respectively.

Seventh-ranked Gohar – who reached the British Open three years ago as an 18-year-old – produced the first surprise result at Allam Sport Centre in the University of Hull as she defeated the 30-year-old 2017 world champion in straight games.

An 11-9, 11-7, 11-5 win ended El Welily’s unbeaten run of 15 matches, during which she has won three tournaments.

Gohar’s next opponent will be compatriot Nour El Tayeb, world number three, who beat Joelle King of New Zealand 11-8, 11-3, 11-6.

In the last of the women’s matches, Perry came from a game down to beat the world number two 8-11, 14-12, 11-7, 11-8.

In tomorrow’s semi-final the Briton will play France’s world number four Camille Serme, who won her quarter-final against Nele Gilis of Belgium 11-4, 14-12, 13-11.

There were no slip-ups for the men’s world number one as El Tayeb’s husband Ali Farag beat fellow Egyptian Mohamed Abouelghar 11-8, 11-9, 11-4.

The world champion will now meet New Zealand’s Paul Coll, who won an epic encounter with Egypt’s Mazen Hesham 11-3, 5-11, 11-6, 8-11, 11-6.

Egypt’s world number five Karim Abdel Gawad earned an 11-8, 11-6, 14-16, 10-12, 11-9 win over Germany’s world number three Simon Rösner.

His semi-final opponent will be world number two Mohamed Elshorbagy of Egypt, who earned revenge for his defeat by Colombia’s world number six Miguel Rodriguez in last year's final as he won their rematch 11-6, 11-5, 11-9.
