Defending champion Miguel Rodríguez continued his impressive form at the Professional Squash Association (PSA) British Open in Hull as the Colombian beat Mexico’s César Salazar in a spectacular battle today.

Rodríguez and Salazar delivered arguably the most entertaining match of the tournament so far at the newly-renamed Allam Sport Centre.

Salazar had not recorded a win over his opponent for eight years and Rodríguez continued that impressive run with an 11-8, 10-12, 11-6, 11-8 victory at the sport’s longest-running tournament.

"It was like an exhibition match," Rodríguez said.

"This is our kind of Latin style.

"We know each other’s game and he is very talented.

"He is a top 10 to 15 player when he is at his best.

"I think maybe the mental [side] and the experience paid off at the end.

"I had to play my best and he played better in the second game.

"I had to find that momentum and consistency throughout the game."

Rodríguez now faces a re-match of last year’s final with world number two Mohamed ElShorbagy of Egypt.

Elshorbagy comfortably defeated England's Daryl Selby 11-3, 11-4. 11-2.

The other men's quarter-final decided today pitted Germany's Simon Rösner against Egypt's Karim Abdel Gawad.

Rösner came from a game down to overcome Egypt's Omar Mosaad 7-11, 11-9, 11-7, 11-4.

Gawad, meanwhile, earned his spot in the last eight after a red-hot display saw him despatch compatriot Zahed Salem 11-6, 11-6, 10-12, 11-4.

In the women's event, world number two Nour El Sherbini of Egypt moved a step closer to the successful defence of her title with a straightforward 11-6, 11-5, 11-5 win over England's Victoria Lust.

Awaiting the three-time world champion in the quarter-finals is another English player Sarah Jane-Perry, who was forced to be on top form as she beat India’s Joshna Chinappa 11-6, 9-11, 11-5, 11-8.

Also advancing to the last eight today was fourth seed Camille Serme after the 2015 champion battled to an 11-8, 11-5, 11-13, 11-5 victory over Wales' Tesni Evans.

Standing between the Frenchwoman and a place in the semi-finals is Nele Gilis.

Gilis became the first Belgian player in history to reach the quarter-finals of the PSA British Open after defeating younger sister Tinne 11-2, 11-9, 11-13, 11-3.

Competition in Hull is due to continue tomorrow.

All four quarter-finals in both the men's and women's events are scheduled to be held.
