The United States claimed an emphatic 14-1 victory over tournament debutants Bonaire on the opening day of the 2019 Confederation of North, Central American and Caribbean Association Football Beach Soccer Championship in Puerto Vallarta in Mexico.

Nick Perera scored five for the US at Puerto Vallarta Stadium, while there were also braces for Tanner Akol, David Mondragon and Jason Leopoldo and one goal apiece for Ryan Futagaki, Oscar Reyes and Adriano Dos Santos.

Bonaire’s consolation came courtesy of a Henrich Beaumont free-kick in the Group C clash.

Today’s other match in the same section saw The Bahamas beat Antigua and Barbuda 7-4.

Hosts Mexico also made a winning start to their campaign, defeating Guatemala 4-0 in Group A.

They are level on three points with Costa Rica, who overcame Jamaica 4-2.

Group B also got under way today with defending champions Panama beating the US Virgin Islands 8-1 and Trinidad and Tobago defeating Turks and Caicos Islands 6-0.

The event’s two finalists will qualify for the 2019 FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup, which is due to be held in Paraguay from November 21 to December 1.

Round robin action is set to continue tomorrow.

The schedule includes the first two matches in Group D with Guadeloupe facing Belize and Guyana meeting El Salvador.

Competition will run through to Sunday (May 19).

The last day will see the final preceded by the third-place play-off.
