Cuba claimed two gold medals on the first day of the World Para Powerlifting World Cup in Lima, which is doubling as a test event for the 2019 Parapan American Games. 

Jose Ramon Pena Garcia took Cuba's first gold in the men's under-49 kilograms, achieving a score of 110kg to do so at Lima’s Sport Centre 2.

Guatemala's Cesar Echeverria took the silver medal with 90kg.

Cuba's second gold came through Cesar Rubio Guerra in the men's under-54 kg competition.

He dominated with a total of 130kg, his nearest opponent being Chile's Javier Ignacio Jimenez Cabrera with 114kg.

Diego Quispe delighted the Peruvian home crowd with a bronze medal as he lifted 100kg.

In the women's competition, Argentina's Lourdes Johanna Maciel achieved gold in the under-45kg with 60.33kg.

Pamela Dominique Munoz Rojas was the victor in the under-67kg after lifting 62kg, while fellow Chilean Macarena Paz Montero Escalona triumphed in the under-86kg with 70kg.

The competition continues tomorrow with the men's under-59kg, under-65kg and under-72kg categories.
