Townend was awarded 19.7 points on Cillnabradden Evo yesterday to take the lead.

Today he completed his second ride on Ballaghmor Class, scoring 21.1 and taking second place as well.

No other rider in Badminton history has been in this position before. 

Fellow Briton Tom McEwen has been pushed down into third place with Toledo De Kerser on a score of 24.7.

Townend, who lost two of his sponsors following a whipping scandal last year, is in an enviable position at the five-star event.

The competition continues tomorrow with cross-country action.
