Egyptian national champion Ahmed Saad claimed gold in front of his home crowd at the African Weightlifting Championships in Cairo.

Saad emerged the winner in the men’s 67 kilogram event in Cairo Stadium.

He achieved a lift of 134kg in the snatch before succeeding at 168kg in the clean and jerk, giving him a total of 302kg.

He finished narrowly ahead of Madagascar's Togunirina Allan, who ended with 300kg.

Bronze was won by Libya's Ihsan Shabi, who lifted a total of 281kg.

Tunisia’s Karem Ben Hnia triumphed in the 73kg competition in the Egyptian capital, as he lifted a total of 338kg.

Home favourite Mostafa Ibrahim ended runner-up on 330kg.

The Championships will continue tomorrow.
