Su-Wei Hsieh came from a set down to beat China’s Qiang Wang at the Stuttgart Open to advance to a second-round match with top seed Naomi Osaka.

The Chinese Taipei player dropped the opening set 6-4 to Qiang at the Porsche-Arena in the German city.

Hsieh recovered impressively from the early setback as she clinched the remaining sets 6-3, 6-4 to advance to the second round.

Osaka is set to be her next opponent, with the Japanese player having been awarded a bye through the first round.

Should the Australian and US Open champion reach the final of this Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) Mandatory event she would be assured of retaining her ranking.

Romania’s Simona Halep had the opportunity to surpass Osaka, but was forced to withdraw through injury yesterday.

Czech Republic’s Petra Kvitová could still replace Osaka and is scheduled to face Greetje Minnen of Belgium tomorrow.

Defending champion Karolína Plíšková will face a challenging second round opponent, with the Czech player due to meet Victoria Azárenka.

Belarus’ Azárenka, the former world number one, earned a first round win over Russia’s lucky loser Vera Zvonareva.

Azárenka emerged as a 7-5, 6-4 winner.

The second round of competition is due to begin tomorrow.
