Four-time world champion Adeline Gray claimed the gold medal in the women’s 76 kilograms event at the Pan American Championships in Buenos Aires.

The American defeated Ecuador’s Genesis Valdez in the final in the Argentine capital.

Gray had faced the tough challenge of Canada’s Olympic champion Erica Wiebe in the quarter-finals of the competition at Centro Nacional de Alto Rendimiento Deportivo.

She deafeated Wiebe to progress and eventually faced Valdez in the final, taking gold by virtue of victory by fall.

Wiebe and Peru’s Diana Arroyo won the bronze medals in the division after beating Cuba’s Mabelkis Perez and Mexico’s Gabriela Herrera respectively.

Gray’s triumph was one of three golds for the United States in women’s wrestling events today.

Sarah Hildebrandt achieved a 10-0 win over Ecuador’s Luisa Melendres in the 53kg final, with Canada’s Diana Weicker and Cuba’s Lilianet Andres earning bronze medals. 

The 68kg event saw Tamyra Mensah emerge as the winner as the American wrestler claimed victory by fall over Cuba’s Yudari Rodriquez.

She was joined on the podium by Canada’s Olivia Di Bacco and Mexico’s Ambar Flores.

Cuba’s Yusneylys Lopez overcame American opposition in the 50kg final as she secured a 3-0 win over Erin Golston.

Home favourite Patricia Bermudez earned a bronze medal for Argentina, along with Peru’s Thalia Peche.

Lais Nunes de Oliveira prevented another member of the US team from topping a podium as the Brazilian secured a 6-1 win over Mallory Velte in the 62kg gold medal bout.

Venezuela’s Nathaly Herrera and Puerto Rico’s Abnelis Miranda completed the medal places.

The final women’s wrestling competition saw Ecuador’s Lissette Castillo beat Canada’s Hannah Taylor by fall in the 57kg event.

Jacarra Winchester of the US and Venezuela’s Betzabeth Comenarez both won bronze medals. 

The US team also earned two men’s freestyle titles, with both events held in a round robin format.

Chandler Rogers topped the 79kg standings ahead of Colombia’s Santiago Restrepo and Canada’s Jasmit Phulka.

His team-mate J’den Cox won the 92kg competition, with Puerto Rico’s Jaime Espinal and Paraguay’s Diego Florentin completing the podium.
