Lilian De Geus of The Netherlands finished with the gold medal at the RS:X Windsurfing European Championships, also winning the overall title at the week-long regatta in Palma de Mallorca by three points from China’s Yunxiu Lu.

Overall bronze, for the second year running, went to Britain’s 20-year-old Emma Wilson, who finished seven points off the winner - who missed the Olympic podium by one place at Rio 2016 - and four behind Lu.

The European bronze went to France’s Rio 2016 gold medallist Charline Picon.

Dutch sailors also topped the men’s race in this Olympic class windsurfing category which has been part of the Games since Beijing 2008.

Kiran Badloe was overall regatta and European champion with 38 points, and compatriot Dorian Van Rijsselberge, the London 2012 and Rio 2016 champion, took second place with 49 points.

France’s Thomas Goyard took European and overall bronze ahead of compatriot Louis Giard, the former world and European champion.

Israel’s Yoav Cohen was the highest-placed under-21 sailor in 14th place, with second and third place in that category going to Italy’s Luca Di Tomassi, who was 20th, and Britain’s Andy Brown, who was one place further back.

The women’s result meant that Wilson, from Christchurch in Dorset, also retained her European under-21 title and took the European silver medal as the second sailor home from that continent.

Second placed European under-21 woman was Israel’s Katy Spychakov, who finished seventh overall, two places ahead of under-21 team-mate Noy Drihan.

"I’m super happy to get second European and third overall," said Wilson after the double-points medal race finale.

"It was a tough week with some super shifty conditions, today we had a nice medal race in 12 to 14 knots sea breeze conditions.

"I had a good race and finally finished third, which was just enough to secure second European."
