It was a strong opening day for England at the first edition of the FIFA eNations Cup in London, as Argentina and Brazil secured places in the knockout stage.

England finished top of Group A courtesy of six wins, two draws and one defeat at the esports event.

They were followed by France, who got six wins, two draws and four defeats from their matches.

Saudi Arabia, Finland and South Africa lie outside the qualification places for the knockout stage of the tournament.

There was South American success in Group C, as Argentina and Brazil secured progress.

Argentina won eight of their 12 matches to ensure their safe passage, while Brazil won seven and lost two.

Germany, Sweden and Norway saw their hopes end as a result.

Groups B saw Mexico top the standings at the end of the first day with seven wins, two draws and three defeats.

United States and Spain will hope to overhaul the leaders tomorrow.

Group D is currently led by Denmark, with Russia, Portugal and the Netherlands closely behind.

As part of the format of the first FIFA eNations Cup, participating countries and players are competing in individual matches on Xbox and PlayStation during the group stage.

The third match consists of a two-versus-two contest on a console decided by both teams before the tie, based on their individual preference.

Each match-up between two nations in the group stage is counted towards the overall group table.

A prize pool of $100,000 (£75,000/€88,000) is at stake for the teams.

As one of the major events in the EA SPORTS FIFA 19 Global Series, the FIFA eNations Cup is a new addition to this season’s professional eFootball calendar.

Players will have the chance to win up to 1,500 EA SPORTS FIFA 19 Global Series points, providing them with the chance to climb the FIFA 19 Global Series Rankings and take a significant step towards the FIFA eWorld Cup 2019.

The FIFA eWorld Cup features 32 players, who battle it out to become world champion.

The tournament is due to take place at the beginning of August.
