The International Judo Federation (IJF) and All Japan Judo Federation (AJJF) have agreed on new colours to be used for competition mats at the 2019 World Championships in Tokyo.
The colour scheme, made up of a blue inside area and red outside area, is also expected to be used at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.
But it will be tested at the World Championships, due to be held from August 25 to September 1.
The tatami will make its debut at the All Japan Judo Championships on April 6 and 7, when the country’s best judoka will compete to earn a spot in the World Championships team.
Taishan Sports, an official supplier of the IJF, will produce it.
The blue inside area and red outside area were developed to be viewer-friendly for spectators at the venue and those watching on television.
The colour scheme will replace the current yellow inside area and red outside area.
It has yet to be decided whether the tatami will be used at events other than the All Japan Judo Championships, 2019 World Championships and Tokyo 2020 Olympics.
"With the announcement of the new colour of tatami, we can begin to imagine the atmosphere of the 2019 World Championships and the 2020 Olympic Games," AJJF President Yasuhiro Yamashita said.
"We are 500 days out from Tokyo 2020 and we will continue to work hard in our preparation so we can deliver an historic Olympic Games, an Olympic Games where the performance of the athletes will inspire fans and give them the courage to go after their dreams."
The 2019 World Championships, set to take place at the Japanese capital’s Nippon Budokan venue, is viewed by the IJF as a key test event for organisers prior to Tokyo 2020.
