Cristian Monckeberg, Minister of Housing and Urban Planning, unveiled the proposals at a meeting of Chile’s Sports Commission.

According to AS Chile, Monckeberg claimed the Athletes’ Village is expected to cost $180 million (£136 million/€160 million) with the sum expected to be achieved by a mix of public and private financing.

This is believed to be a similar figure to the amount Peru has spent on the Village for this year’s Games in the capital city of Lima.

A tender process is expected to take place in the second half of 2019, with the contract set to be awarded in the early months of next year.

Construction of the Athletes’ Village is expected to start in 2021.

The facility is due to be delivered between four to five months prior to the Games, which will take place from October 6 to 24.

The Parapan American Games will follow from November 3 to 11.

Initial plans had projected the Athletes’ Village would be completed nine months prior to the Games.

The Bicentennial Park in Cerrillos was chosen as the location for the Athletes’ Village.

It was claimed in the Santiago 2023 bidding document that the site would be a 12-minute journey from Estadio Nacional Julio Martínez Prádanos on the metro.

The national stadium will host both the Opening and Closing Ceremonies of the Games, as well as athletics.

The location has reportedly been moved nearly two kilometres further west, which it is claimed will increase travel times for athletes, leading to suggestions a shuttle bus service may be required for the Games.

Monckeberg said the Athletes’ Village would consist of 1,750 apartments, which would have around 7,000 beds in total.

Initially, more than 2,000 apartments and 10,000 beds were earmarked for the project.

The apartments are expected to have facilities which meet the needs of disabled people.

Temporary medical facilities, a dining arena and a gymnasium are among the facilities included in the plans.

The Athletes’ Village is due to be converted into social housing following the Pan and Parapan American Games in the Chilean capital.

Santiago 2023's bid document had stated the project formed part of the city’s urban plan for the next 20 years, which involved the construction of around 16,800 homes.

The plan earmarked the area to form part of a microcity, which would include a central park and numerous green areas.

Santiago 2023 announced its Organising Committee in December with former tennis player Fernando Gonzalez named chair.

Santiago was confirmed as host in November 2017 after its bid was unanimously approved by PanamSports.

The city was the sole bidder for the 19th edition of the Games, following the withdrawal of Buenos Aires.
