Olympic champion Stina Nilsson of Sweden has extended her lead in the International Ski Federation (FIS) Cross-Country sprint World Cup standings after triumphing in today's event in Falun. 

Nilsson won today's sprint event in 3min 07.72sec, beating her greatest rival and world champion, Maiken Caspersen Falla, by 0.67 seconds at a venue that will be used to stage ski jumping and Nordic combined if Stockholm Åre 2026 wins it bid to host the Winter Olympic Games.

In doing so, the Pyeongchang 2018 champion prevented Falla from achieving four straight World Cup victories.

Another Swede, Maja Dahlqvist, finished third in 3:09.86. 

Nillsson has now increased her lead over Falla in the sprint standings.

The Swedish skier has 576 points and Falla 543.

in third is Dahlqvist with 436 points.

The men's competition saw a clean sweep for Norway.

The victor was Johannes Høsflot Klæbo, who secured his seventh win of the season and subsequently equalled his record number of sprint victories in a single campaign.

He crossed the finish line in 2:52.38, 10 and 28 seconds ahead of compatriots Emil Iversen and Sindre Bjørnestad respectively.

Klæbo is now dominant in the men's sprint standings with 704 points. 

His nearest opponent is Federico Pellegrino of Italy with 509 points and Norway's Eirik Brandsdal in third on 457.

The World Cup event in Falun is due to continue tomorrow with the women's 10 kilometre race and the men's 15km competition.
