Gizem Elmaagacli of Turkey chose the perfect stage to secure her first major title as she won the women's compound final with victory in a shoot-off tiebreaker against Russian Alexandra Savenkova at the European Indoor Archery Championships in Samsun.

Elmaagacli held her nerve to clinch top spot on the podium after a tense contest with Savenkova had finished all square at 146-146 at the Samsun Archery Hall.

The triumph handed the Turkish archer, whose brother Demir was Archery World Cup champion in 2015, a maiden gold medal.

Natalia Avdeeva of Russia denied Turkey another medal as she beat Yesim Bostan 148-140 in the match for bronze.

"It is absolutely great to have this success [in Samsun] and see people who are proud of me here,” said Elmaagacli.

“I was dreaming about shooting in the arena since the beginning of the competition.

"I had experience at the World Cup Final [also in Samsun], but that was also a little disappointing.

“This time I stepped up."

Dutch world number one Mike Schloesser also needed a shoot-off to seal victory as he claimed the men's compound title by edging French opponent Adrien Gontier in a tense final.

Schloesser came into the match as the favourite but underdog Gontier put in a solid performance before eventually losing in the shoot-out.

Domagoj Buden of Croatia took bronze with a 146-144 win over Russian Anton Bulaev.

Max Mandia reigned supreme in an all-Italian men's recurve final, defeating compatriot Marco Morello in yet another shoot-off.

Mandia eventually recorded a 6-5 victory to condemn his compatriot to the silver medal, while Russian Erdem Tsydypov earned bronze by dispatching Croatia's Alen Remar 7-1.

Russia’s Sayana Tsyrempilova proved too strong for Lidiia Sichenikova of Ukraine in the only individual final not to require a shoot-off to decide the destination of the European indoor crown.

Tsyrempilova produced an assured display to beat Sichenikova 6-2 and claim the women's recurve title.

Russia also ousted Ukraine in the bronze medal match as Inna Stepanova eased to a 7-3 win against Polina Rodionova.
