Switzerland's Yannick Glatthard and France’s Louna Ladevant shared first place in men’s under-22 lead qualification as action begun today at the International Climbing and Mountaineering Federation (UIAA) Ice Climbing World Youth Championships in Oulu in Finland.

The duo were followed in the standings by Russia’s Vadim Malshchukov as a total of eight athletes advanced through to the finals on the 22-metre ice tower. 

In women’s under-22 lead qualification, Switzerland's Sina Goetz came out on top with Russia's Valeriia Bogdan in second place.

Tied for third spot were Russia's Kseniia Ivanova and Switzerland's Vivien Labarile.

In the under-19 lead events, Russia's Ilia Kurochkin was the best male qualifier, while compatriot Iuliia Filateva and Ukraine's Victoria Holub were looking down on the rest of the female competitors.

The eight qualifiers in the men's under-16 lead event all performed equally strongly with Russia's Timifei Lushnikov among them.

Finland's Tilda Kuikanvirta was joined by three Russians - Daria Glotova, Marina Tokareva and Olga Vylegzhanina - in qualifying first in the equivalent women's competition.

Speed qualification was also held today with Malshchukov topping the men's under-22 standings in 18.86sec and Bogdan leading the way in the women's under-22 rankings in 44.26.

Malshchukov was followed by fellow Russian Anton Sukharev in 19.46 and Ladevant in 22.01.

Bogdan, meanwhile, finished comfortably ahead of Liechtenstein's Lea Beck, the runner-up in 1:05.20.

Czech Republic's Aneta Louzecka came third in 1:13.58.

The other leading speed qualifiers were all Russian - Maksim Reshetnikov in the men's under-19 in 20.75, Irina Dubovtseva in the women's under-19 in 28.55, Ilia Saprykin in the men's under-16 in 21.47 and Vylegzhanina in the women's under-16 in 32.95.

All finals are due to take place tomorrow.

The event is organised by the Climbing Club of Oulu.
