Chinese Taipei endured mixed fortunes as the International Volleyball Federation Vizag Open began with qualification today in Visakhapatnam in India.

Hsieh Ya-Jen and Wang Chin-Ju led the way from the men's qualification round to the main draw at the event, part of the FIVB World Tour, with a straight-sets win over Ukraine's Anton Didyk and Sviatoslav Karvatskyi.

The Taiwanese duo defeated their Ukrainian opponents 21-16, 21-19 to progress but compatriots Hsu Chen-Wei and Wu Shin-Shian failed to follow suit, losing 21-16, 21-12 to Japan's Kensuke Shoji and Masato Kurasaka.

Denmark’s Mads Rosager and Jacob Stein Brinck also reached the main draw as they beat Hans Erik Dybfest and Ruben Olai Lund Lovli of Norway 21-15, 21-15.

In the women's qualification stage, the United States qualified two pairs to the main competition round.

The sister pairing of Audrey and Nicole Nourse overcame compatriots Corinne Quiggle and her partner Cassie House 21-14, 17-21, 15-12 in a three-set battle.

Tanna Aljoe and Melissa Fuchs joined their team-mates with a 21-11, 21-13 success against Malaysia’s Tasha Mae and Sun Woon Joo.

Russia’s Ekaterina Filina and Ekaterina Zhazhigina will also be in the main draw after they ousted home favourites K. Lavanya Lavanya and C.H. Rajitha Rajitha of India 21-6, 21-10.

The main draw begins tomorrow.
