The Dutch capital was chosen to host the mass participation event, which often attracts around 20,000 gymnasts, by the FIG Executive Committee at its meeting in Lausanne this week.

FIG President Morinari Watanabe and Royal Dutch Gymnastics Federation counterpart Monique Kempff then signed the hosting agreement for the event in four years' time.

The 17th edition of the World Gymnaestrada, the largest event on the FIG calendar, is scheduled to run from August 6 to 12.

The event will be held at the RAI Amsterdam Convention Centre, while the Olympic Stadium will host the Opening and Closing Ceremonies.

"I am very happy with the decision to allocate the 17th World Gymnaestrada to Amsterdam, one of the most beautiful cities in the world," said Watanabe.

"This is great news not only for the history of Gymnastics, but also for the history of Amsterdam. 

"The Organising Committee can count on the FIG's full support. 

"Let's create a new chapter in history together."

FIG claim the World Gymnaestrada, held every four years, is based on the principles of friendship, fun, fitness and fundamentals.

It is open to gymnasts of all levels and abilities.

Amsterdam last hosted the event in 1991, while The Netherlands also held the first edition back in 1953.

"We are honoured to host the World Gymnaestrada 2023 in Amsterdam," said Kempff.

"We are looking forward to welcoming the world Gymnastics family to The Netherlands and to inviting them to take the stage and feel at home.”

This year's World Gymnaestrada is scheduled to take place in Dornbirn in Austria from July 7 to 13.
