The Papua New Guinea Olympic Committee (PNGOC) will be given a cash injection by SP Brewery to help with the country's preparations for this year's Pacific Games and Tokyo 2020 after the two organisations renewed their longstanding partnership.

The PNGOC is set to receive K409,825 (£95,000/$122,000/€108,000) for the next three years up until 2021 as a result of the extension of the agreement with SP Brewery.

PNGOC secretary general and International Olympic Committee member Auvita Rapilla attended the signing ceremony alongside SP Brewery managing director Stan Joyce.

Rapilla admitted the extension was timely for the PNGOC, which is sending athletes to this year's Pacific Games in Samoa and next year's Summer Olympic Games in Tokyo.

"We are grateful for the support of SP Brewery who have been a great partner of the PNG Olympic Committee and team Papua New Guinea over the years," she said.

"We welcome their partnership for the next three years and together with all of our other partners will continue to aim for the best performance and results for Papua New Guinea."

Joyce revealed SP Brewery was delighted to renew its long-term agreement with the PNGOC at a crucial juncture for sport in the country.

"Today’s cheque presentation is a testament to SP Brewery’s commitment to supporting our PNG athletes excel and be the best at the international level," he said.

Papua New Guinea hosted the 2015 Pacific Games and finished top of the medals table.

They won a total of 217 medals, including 88 gold.

The Pacific nation has never won a medal at the Olympic Games since making its debut at Montreal 1976 and sent eight competitors to the last event in Rio de Janeiro in 2016.
