Festivities have been arranged by the Norwegian National Olympic Committee, the City of Lillehammer and the Norwegian Olympic Museum.

Broadcaster NRK are also involved with an Olympic flame set to be re-lit in the presence of Norwegian Olympic medallists.

All 10 venues used in 1994 remain in use, with the town going on to stage the Winter Youth Olympic Games in 2016.

Hosts Norway won the most medals at 26 but Russia secured the most golds with 11.

Norwegian speed skater Johann Olav Koss won three golds while Italian cross-country skier Manuela Di Centa claimed five medals.

South Korea's short track athlete Kim Yun-mi won gold in the 3,000m relay at the age of just 13 while the rivalry between Americans Tonya Harding and Nancy Kerrigan dominated the women's figure skating and garnered huge international attention.

Kerrigan was attacked before the Games by a man who struck her a few inches above the knee, but recovered to win a silver medal in Norway. 

The attack was traced back to Harding's former husband Jeff Gillooly and her bodyguard Shawn Eckhardt.

Harding was later found guilty of being involved in the attack and banned from the sport for life.

Lillehammer hosted in 1994 just two years after the Albertville 1992 Games in France, as the International Olympic Committee opted to stage the event in different years to the Summer Olympics.

The town had been beaten by Albertville in the 1992 race.

Organisers hailed the Games for their sustainability, with more than 20 environmental projects implemented.

This included medals made primarily from natural granite and Olympic Torches featuring recycled glass cement.

Anniversary celebrations will take place from today, the 25-year anniversary of the Opening Ceremony at the ski jumping hill, until February 17.
