The International Olympic Committee (IOC) and International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) have confirmed there will be additional gold medal events held in morning sessions of athletics at next year's Olympic Games in Tokyo.

In a statement sent to insidethegames, the two organisations admitted they were currently in discussions over which finals should feature as part of the morning session at the Olympics in the Japanese capital.

The exact number has not been revealed by Tokyo 2020, the IOC or the IAAF.

Medal races in race walks and marathons have already been moved to the morning to combat the high temperatures expected during the period of the Games.

It has been claimed the reason behind staging extra finals in the morning is to appease broadcasters in the United States, who pay considerable amounts of money to show coverage of the Games.

Swimming medal races will also be held in the first session of the day, which will be prime-time for many parts of the US, after Tokyo 2020, the IOC and the International Swimming Federation reached an agreement in September.

The majority of athletics finals, including the blue riband sprints, are traditionally held in the evening, the prime viewing time in the OIympic host country.

Several track and field medal events did take place in the morning session at Rio 2016, including the men's 400 metres hurdles, women's hammer throw and men's and women's 3,000m steeplechase races.

"There will be some morning athletics finals at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020, as there were at the Olympic Games Rio 2016," the IOC said.

"Discussions as to which finals will be contested in the morning are ongoing with the IAAF.

"They will be confirmed once agreed upon by all parties."
