Jodie McKew has been awarded the Caroline Facer Trophy at British Taekwondo's national training centre in Manchester.

The trophy was introduced by the national governing body in 2018 in memory of taekwondo athlete Facer, who died last year aged 34.

It will be awarded each year to a member who fits what Facer stood for, British Taekwondo say.

Stuart Facer, Caroline's husband, selected McKew as he felt her story captured some of Caroline's owns determination and hardworking values.

The recipient receives £1,000 ($1,300/€1,100) to go towards competitions and travel.

McKew was nominated for the award by her parents.

She is currently in the second year as a member of the British Taekwondo development programme.

McKew travels solo from Belfast to Manchester at least three times a month to attend her training sessions, with all her expenses self-funded.

British Taekwondo added that McKew's family are continually trying to raise funds to support her training.

She has enjoyed impressive success during 2018, winning gold medals at the Dutch, Luxembourg and Croatia Open events.

McKew was also crowned British national champion and captained their female cadet team at the European Championships in Spain.

"I am honoured to receive this fantastic award," McKew said.

"I want to say a big thank you to Stuart Facer and British Taekwondo for choosing me, I feel very special.

"Thank you to all who have supported me on my journey so far.

"This is an excellent way to finish off a great year."

British Taekwondo performance director Gary Hall presented McKew with the trophy.
