Brazil won their third straight match at the International Handball Federation Men's World Championships to claim a spot in the main round for the first time.

Having already beaten Serbia and Russia in their last two games at the tournament - which is taking place across Germany and Denmark - the South Americans beat Unified Korea 35-26 at the Mercedes-Benz Arena in Berlin to advance from Group A.

The match started evenly but with the score at 5-5 Brazil took the initiative to finish the first half 18-10 to the good.

Benefiting from a strong defence and with the Koreans clearly tiring, Brazil increased their lead in the second half.

Felipe Borges finished as their top scorer with six.

It means with six points, Brazil finish third in the group behind defending champions France and co-hosts Germany, taking the last qualification spot from the group.

In the other big result of the day Egypt beat Angola 33-28 in Group D to secure the last spot in the main round.

Playing at the Royal Arena in Copenhagen, Egypt took control early on - in part thanks to a two-minute suspension for Angola's Rome Hebo - and led 19-12 at half time.

Knowing a win would guarantee them a place in the next round Egypt then just had to hold on and they did so, although Angola managed to reduce their lead to five.

The result means they finish third in Group D behind Sweden and Hungary, who played each other today.

They faced off in Group D’s last match, with Sweden winning 33-30 to leave Hungary on six points, while Egypt sit one behind them on five.

In Group C Tunisia claimed third spot with a 32-27 win over Austria at the Jyske Bank Boxen in Herning, and in Group B Iceland beat Macedonia by just one goal, 22-21, to seal third place there.

That match went ahead at the Olympiahalle in Munich.

In the day's other results, in Group A co-hosts Germany beat Serbia 31-23 and France beat Russia 23-22 to finish second and first respectively.

In Group B Bahrain beat Japan in a tight match 23-22 and Croatia beat Spain 23-19.

In Group C Chile beat Saudi Arabia 32-27 and Denmark beat Norway 30-26.

After a rest day tomorrow, the main round will then begin on Saturday (January 19) with action in Cologne and Herning.
