The Government in Fiji has pledged FJD800,000 (£300,000/$376,000/€331,000) from its national budget to help the country's athletes at the 2019 Pacific Games in Apia.

Maritino Nemani, the Permanent Secretary of Youth and Sports, made the announcement during a launch event for Pacific Games lottery tickets in Suva.

"Government has committed FJD800,000 towards preparation and this compliments the Fiji National Sports Commissions funding to the National Federations," he said to the Fiji Sun.

"This is a true reflection of the commitment of the Government to develop sports in the country.

"Sport is not just a simple game, it is much more than that.

"It symbolises a dream to an individual, and to a team."

Nemani also asked the country to support Fiji's athletes in the Samoan capital next year.

"I would like to invite our corporate houses to participate and donate for this worthy cause," he added.

"Let us all become part of the sporting community and support Team Fiji reaching newer heights."
