Cameroon beat Mali 4-2 today to finish third in the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations in Ghana.

In what was the only match of the day at the Cape Coast Sports Stadium, Cameroon were undoubtedly the better team, gaining a 2-0 lead after 40 minutes thanks to a brace from Ninon Abena.

However, a goal from Mali’s Fatoumata Diarra in the 44th minute brought her side back into the contest just before half-time, and then an own goal from Aurelle Awona in the 56th minute saw them draw level against the odds.

With their goal scorer Abena now off the pitch having been substituted shortly after half-time, Cameroon needed another saviour to win them the bronze medal in the 34 minutes that remained.

Thankfully for them, their saviour did come through substitute Gabrielle Onguene, who netted shortly after the hour mark just four minutes after coming on.

With Cameroon having re-taken the lead, the game began to settle down and it looked as if the match would end at 3-2.

In the second minute of added time, though, defender Christine Manie put the win beyond doubt, placing a lovely free-kick into the top-right corner.

The final is due to take place tomorrow at the Accra Sports Stadium, between Nigeria and South Africa, with the latter side looking to win the trophy for the first time.
