Thailand will host the 2019 International Wheelchair Basketball Federation (IWBF) Women’s Under-25 World Championships, it has been announced.

The city of Suphanburi, north-west of Bangkok, will play host to the tournament between May 22 and 30 next year.

It will be the first time Thailand has hosted an IWBF World Championships, with the last edition held in Beijing in 2015.

The IWBF made the announcement following a decision at their Executive Committee meeting.

"Thailand's bid met all requirements, the country is developing a good reputation for hosting Para-sport events, and they have great facilities," said IWBF President Ulf Mehrens.

"It will offer optimal conditions for the organisation of these Championships and we are excited to host our first ever world competition in Thailand."

Whilst Thailand has never hosted a World Championships before, it has hosted various lower level international events, including the Under-23 Asia Oceania Championships and the Central and East Asia Qualifying Tournament for the Asian Para Games.

The President of Thailand's Wheelchair Basketball Sports Association Phatt Krissana said the IWBF knows of Thailand's "true passion" for organising such events.

"Hosting the IWBF Under-25 World Championships shows our commitment to developing our youth and female wheelchair basketball programmes in Thailand and we are delighted to be able to showcase the sport at a world level," he said.
