Mexico edged Puerto Rico in a closely-fought encounter to win the final of the International Wheelchair Basketball Federation Central America and Caribbean Championships in Costa Rica's capital San José today. 

The Mexicans prevailed 59-56 at the Gimnasio Nacional to seal a memorable triumph.

It secures the successful defence of their title having beaten Puerto Rico in the 2016 final.

By reaching the final, both teams have qualified for the 2019 Parapan American Games in Lima.

They will join the United States, Canada and hosts Peru at the event, with most teams yet to qualify.

Today also saw the bronze medal game take place, with Nicaragua defeating El Salvador 63-31.

The outcome marked a reverse of the third-place play-off from 2016.

Hosts Costa Rica, meanwhile, secured a fifth-place finish thanks to a 47-36 win over the Dominican Republic.
