Roger Federer of Switzerland and Kevin Anderson of South Africa won their opening matches of the Shanghai Masters held at the Qizhong Forest Sports City Arena in China.

Both players had received a bye into the round-of-32 and proved triumphant against their opponents at the Association of Tennis Professionals World Tour Masters 1000 competition. 

Federer won 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 against Russia's Daniil Medvedev on Centre Court, while Anderson beat Mikhail Kukushkin of Kazakhstan 6-3, 6-2. 

"In the third set I really started to figure it out, as well, how aggressive or how tactical I wanted to make the match, and by trying everything, I found a solution at the end, which was a great feeling to have, so I was very happy," Federer, the 20-time Grand Slam champion, said.

Argentina's Juan Martín del Potro has also progressed into the round-of-16 after winning against Richard Gasquet of France 7-5, 7-6. 

Kyle Edmund of Great Britain defeated Italy's Andreas Seppi 6-3, 6-4 to book his place in the final 16.

The Beijing Open champion Nikoloz Basilashvili of Georgia lost to Alexander Zverev of Germany 7-5, 6-4.

Japan's Kei Nishikori, Italy's Marco Cecchinato, Alex De Minaur of Australia, Sam Querrey of the United States, Spain's Roberto Bautista Agut and Stefanos Tsitsipas of Greece also progressed in the round-of-16.

Matches tomorrow include Novak Djokovic of Serbia against Cecchinato, Anderson playing Tsitsipas and Federer meeting Bautista Agut.
