Defending champions Ali Farag and Nour El Tayeb of Egypt were victorious in the second round of the Professional Squash Association (PSA) World Tour Platinum US Open at Philadelphia's Drexel University.

Farag beat Switzerland's Nicolas Mueller 3-0 to begin his defence, while El Tayeb was victorious over India’s Dipika Pallikal Karthik with the same score in the women's competition.

Farag and El Tayeb made history upon winning their respective events at the US Open last year.

They became the first married couple in sporting history to win the same major sports title on the same day.

Farag is now due to play Joel Makin of Wales in the next round after he beat Mathieu Castagnet of France 3-1.

"It’s never easy to start off against Nicky," said Farag.

"He’s a very tricky player and he’s very dangerous at the front of the court, so I had to keep my metal and keep it deep in the corners because I know that if I leave it at the front then I can’t really read him because he’s got all of those trick shots.

"One or two of those games could have gone either way, so I’m happy to get off with a 3-0 win."

In other matches in the men's event, world number one Mohamed ElShorbagy of Egypt eased past his American training partner Todd Harrity 3-0.

England's Declan James and compatriot Adrian Waller played the longest game of the day, James eventually emerging as 3-2 winner after more than 100 minutes on court.

In the women's event, El Tayeb is now scheduled to come up against Amanda Sobhy of the United States to try and gain a place in the quarter-final after the American beat Victoria Lust of England 3-1.

World number one Nour El Sherbini of Egpyt triumphed 3-0 over Joey Chan of Hong Kong, and world champion Raneem El Welily of Egypt comfortably beat Australia's Rachael Grinham 3-0.

Action is due continue tomorrow with the third round at one of the most prestigious squash tournaments in the world.
