She eventually ousted Vũ Thị Trang of Vietnam 17-21, 21-15, 21-7 to book her place in round two.

Tai, who won the Asian Games title last month in Jakarta, will now play her compatriot Chiang Ying-li in the second round.

Second seed Michelle Li of Canada was not so lucky as her challenge was ended by home qualifer Liang Ting-yu.

The 2014 Commonwealth Games champion was beaten 21-19, 21-14.

Third seed Line Kjærsfeldt of Denmark knocked out Hong Kong qualifier Cheung Ying Mei 21-14, 21-10 to also progress.

In the men's draw, Chinese Taipei's top seed Chou Tien-chen, who is searching for a third straight title, provided the host nation with more cheer.

Chou, who won the Korea Open last week, thrashed Hong Kong's Hu Yun 21-17, 21-9 in his first round clash.

It was a bad day for seeded players, however, as five of the eight were knocked out including the second, third and fourth ranked players.

Second seed Wang Tzu-wei, another Taiwanese player, lost 21-17, 21-17 to Japan's Riichi Takeshita.

Malaysia's Liew Daren, the third seed, was knocked out 21-19, 21-18 by Chinese Taipei qualifier Chen Chi-ting.

Fourth seed Hsu Jen-hao, another Chinese Taipei entrant, exited as he was beaten 21-18, 22-20 by Malaysia's Lee Zii Jia.
