Home player Heo Kwang Lee came through today’s men’s singles qualifying rounds at the Badminton World Federation’s Korea Open in Seoul.

Kwang Lee won his opening match against Croatia’s Zvonomir Durkinjak 21-17, 21-16 before beating his fellow countryman Seung Hoon Lee 21-18, 21-16.

He will be joined in the main draw by two Chinese players - Zhao Junpeng and Zhou Zeqi, as well as Lin Yu Hsien of Chinese Taipei.

Zhou defeated Matthew Fogarty of the United States 21-9, 21-9 in his opener and then overcame Malaysia’s Iskandar Zulkarnain 22-20, 21-17.

Zhao first match was a challenge as he only just managed to beat India’s Ajay Jayaram 26-24, 21-18.

He had a relatively easy time in his next match as he earned a 21-14, 21-18 win Hong Kong’s Chan Yin Chak, who had come through a marathon of an opening match, defeating Kan Chao Yu of Chinese Taipei 30-28, 24-22.

Lin became one of the less popular performers in Seoul’s SK Handball stadium as he progressed through by beating two home players, knocking out Yun Gyu Lee 21-17, 21-19 before prevailing 22-20, 21-19 over Kim Dong Hun.

As in the men’s competition, two home women players progressed from qualifying - Ga Eun Kim and Lee Se Yeon - along with China’s Li Xueni and Thailand’s Porntip Buranaprasetsuk.

Hyderabad Open winner Ga Eun Kim won her match against Vaidehi Choudhari of India by 21-8, 21-8, and Lee Se Yeon earned a 21-16, 21-9 result against Chen Su Yu of Chinese Taipei.

Buranaparsertsuk earned an 11-21, 21-17, 21-17 win over South Korea’s Jui Jeon.

Lee progressed thanks to a 21-16, 21-9 won over Chinese Taipei’s Su Yu Chen.

The tournament continues tomorrow.
