Top seed Shingo Kunieda battled back from a set down to reach the semi-finals of the men's singles as the US Open wheelchair tennis tournament continued in New York.

The Japanese star endured a difficult start at the Louis Armstrong Stadium at Flushing Meadows, with Sweden’s Stefan Olsson taking the first set 6-0.

Kunieda responded in impressive fashion to win the second 6-1, with the momentum remaining with the tournament favourite as he triumphed 6-3 in the decider.

Nicolas Peifer overcame fellow Frenchman Stéphane Houdet 6-2, 6-2 in his quarter-final match, while Briton’s Alfie Hewett beat Belgium’s Joachim Gerard 7-5, 6-4.

Argentina’s Gustavo Fernandez also reached the semi-finals, as he earned a 6-1, 6-4 win over Britain’s Gordon Reid.

Japan's Yui Kamiji enjoyed a dominant 6-0, 6-0 win over The Netherlands’ Marjolein Buis in the women's singles competition.

Top seed Diede de Groot was also in fine form, as she beat fellow Dutch player Aniek van Koot 6-1, 6-2.

Sabine Ellerbrock of Germany was a 6-1, 6-2 winner against United States' Dana Mathewson, while South Africa’s Kgothatso Montjane celebrated a 6-4, 6-4 success over Britain’s Lucy Shuker.

In the quad singles, top seed David Wagner suffered a 6-3, 7-5 loss to Australia’s Dylan Alcott.

The American bounced back by beating Britain’s Andy Lapthorne 6-2, 6-4.
