The South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee (SASCOC) has paid tribute to long-serving board member Peter Goldhawk following his death at the age of 71.

Goldhawk, considered largely responsible for the formation of the National Paralympic Committee of South Africa (NAPCOSA) competed for Rhodesia in swimming at the 1968 Paralympic Games in Tel Aviv in Israel.

After his competitive career ended, Goldhawk was President of the South African Sports Association for Physically Disabled for many years.

He also contributed to continental and international sporting bodies for disability sport.

Goldhawk helped form the NAPCOSA in 1976 and, after years of service, he was appointed a board member of SASCOC when the organisation was formed in 2004.

Goldhawk was a financial advisor to SASCOC and the secretary for Gride Investment, a SASCOC subsidiary company, due to his background as a chartered accountant.

He was also a director on the Cape Town 2004 Olympic bid and the South African Sports Trust, which aims to enhance education through sport in underprivileged areas.

SASCOC President Gideon Sam paid his respects to the stalwart of disability sport in South Africa and sent his condolences to his family.

“’We are deeply saddened by the loss of such an influential sports personality and administrator who contributed immensely to South African sport for many years,” Sam said.

“We commend Peter for his immense contribution to the nation as a whole during and after the struggle.

“As the macro sports body of South Africa, we hope the legacy he leaves behind will be embedded for the future generation.”
